Scheduling A Busy To-Do-List

During the school year, things get very busy for us and I find that I have to carefully schedule myself or else things fall through the cracks and then I feel nuts.

At the same time, I have three things working against my need to schedule: 1) I run a small business, and it’s feast or famine. Sometimes a job comes up that needs to be attended to immediately and other times there isn’t work for a few days. 2) I have a toddler and she doesn’t respond well to “wait”. 3) I am married to a musician, and although he tries hard to stay scheduled for me, his profession, his small business, and his school all center on other musicians – a group that is notoriously bad at operating on a schedule.

So, I use a bit of a floating schedule, which works like this.

  • I have a daily routine, a weekly routine, and a monthly to-do-list.
  • I schedule work, school, housekeeping, personal time, and family time – otherwise something will get pushed aside, and it’s usually personal time.

Here are the things that need to fit into my schedule:

  1. Cleaning (a more detailed list is here)
  2. Cooking
  3. Baking (a more detailed list is here)
  4. Protected time with Maraika (I spend all the time with her, but this is time that I focus just on her)
  5. Protected time with Ben
  6. Work time
  7. Class time
  8. Homework time
  9. Protected time by myself

I do my best to combine things that I do not like, with things that I do like. For example, I do not like commuting on the subway during rush hour- but I do like reading on the subway. So I get up early to avoid rush hour, do my class readings on the subway, and arrive to school in time to do some homework before class starts.

Ben is also amazing at selecting movies, documentaries, and music for me and putting them onto my ipod – for some reason I would never think to do this for myself, but it makes doing laundry, walking through campus, and just about anything else a lot more enjoyable when I have something great to listen to.

Here is what a typical week would look like . . .
