Candy Sushi Tutorial

For the Goose’s first birthday I wanted to create a menu that took favourite adult foods and made them appealing to kids. Candy sushi was one of my favourite dishes!

Candy Sushi at the Birthday Party

It is really easy to make this, here is what you need:

  • Green Fruit Roll Ups or fruit tape
  • White powdered doughnuts
  • Round gummy candies (for the Roe)
  • Fish gummy candies
  • Octopus gummy candies

To make the maki . . .

  1. Slice the powdered doughnut in half, horizontally (keeping the hole in tact)
  2. Slice some round gummy candies in half.
  3. Fill the doughnut’s center with the gummy candies
  4. Slice a green fruit rollup so that it’s the same height as the doughnut and wrap it around the outside. A little bit of water will make the end sticky so that you can secure it.
  5. You’re done!

For the roe . . .

  1. Slice the doughnut in half vertically (slicing through the hole)
  2. Orient the doughnut cut side down.
  3. Slice a green fruit rollup so that it’s the same height as the doughnut and wrap it around the outside. A little bit of water will make the end sticky so that you can secure it.
  4. Fill the sushi with round gummy candies
  5. You’re done!

For the fish sushi

  1. Slice the doughnut in half vertically (slicing through the hole)
  2. Orient the doughnut cut side down.
  3. Place a fish on top of each doughnut
  4. Slice the fruit roll up so that you have a thin piece and wrap it around the doughnut. Use a little bit of water on the ends to secure them.

Important Tip: You can’t really make these too far ahead of time because they go very stale very quickly.
